Next on our Staff Spotlight, we have Jimena Fernandez, Communication Specialist for ARCH. Jimena has been part of Johns Hopkins and the ARCH team for a year.

Q. What is your role at ARCH?

JF: “I am a Communications Specialist at ARCH. I create communication strategies to inform Rockfish users about any cluster updates and downtimes, whether it is through newsletters, social media, or email lists. I am also in charge of the design, maintenance, and content management of our website.”

Q. How long have you been with the company?

JF: “I started working with the ARCH team last February, so I have been at JHU for more than a year now!”

Q. What is your favorite aspect of your job?

JF: “I like how much I get to learn every day. I enjoy being able to work with people from different backgrounds like engineering or academia, helping me understand how important it is to communicate effectively to different types of audiences.

Q. What is the most interesting project you've worked on here?

JF: “My most interesting project has been to create ARCH’s bi-monthly newsletters. I like to speak with PIs from different departments at Hopkins to learn more about their work and how they utilize ARCH resources to aid in their research. I also enjoy working on Staff Profiles to get more insight into the work of ARCH Team members and their careers.”

Q. What is a skill that’s important to have in your role?

JF: “A skill that is important for my role is being motivated to grow and learn. As a new member of the ARCH team, I had to further my knowledge of the high-performance computing field to design different communication strategies. I reached out to many of my peers from the ARCH team for help and clarification of certain terms and concepts. Also, I research about HPC and new technologies on my own time. As a Communication Specialist, you must fully understand your target audience and the industry that they are part of to make sure your work aligns with their needs and goals.”

Q. What are your goals for the next few months/years?

JF: “My goals in the next few months are to continue working on future newsletters, designing communication plans, and improving the user experience of our website. I want to continue strengthening my skills in web design”

Q. What do you like to do outside of work?

JF: “When I am not working, I am trying to work on my goal of reading more non-fiction books. I am currently reading Design as Art by Bruno Munari.”
