Andre Barbosa

Next on our Staff Spotlight, we have Andre Barbosa, Assistant Research Scientist at ARCH. 

Andre has been part of the ARCH team early this year. 

 

Q. What is your role at ARCH?

AB: “I am an Assistant Research Scientist on the User and Scientific Support team. My primary role involves providing scientific support and technical expertise to researchers, with a focus on optimizing analysis workflows and troubleshooting computational issues to ensure the efficient use of our HPC resources.”

Q. What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

AB: “My background in computational biology and experience working with advanced scientific tools brought me here. I’ve always been motivated by the opportunity to support cutting-edge research and solve computational challenges.” 

Q. What is your favorite aspect of your job?

AB: “I really enjoy tackling problem-solving (troubleshooting) tasks. Working with brilliant researchers across different fields, and the diverse range of projects, keeps me engaged and continually learning.”

Q. What is the most interesting project you've worked on here?

AB: “One of the most interesting projects I’ve worked on involved optimizing large-scale parallel jobs for a bioinformatics workflow. It required innovative approaches to improve efficiency, and it was fulfilling to contribute to advancements in the research.”

Q. What is a skill that’s important to have in your role?

AB: “Problem-solving is crucial. You need to be able to think critically and creatively to resolve technical challenges that users encounter, often under tight deadlines. Additionally, great communication skills are essential to ensure complex solutions are well-understood by the research community.”

Q. What are your goals for the next few months/years?

AB: “In the near future, I aim to further enhance the user experience at ARCH by developing new resources like workshops and tutorials. Long-term, I want to deepen my expertise in HPC and expand my knowledge of emerging computational technologies to better support innovative research.”

Q. What do you like to do outside of work?

AB: “I enjoy spending time with my wife and two cats and hanging out with friends. I’m also passionate about music and love to unwind by playing the guitar.”
