Staff Spotlight:
Wei Wu

Next on our Staff Spotlight, we have Wei Wu, Assistant Research Scientist at ARCH. Wei has been part of the team since March 2024.

Q. What is your role at ARCH?

WW: “I am an Assistant Research Scientist with the application team. My primary responsibilities include user support, assisting with resource utilization, installing new software for research, troubleshooting programs and workflows, and hosting training workshops.”

Q. What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

WW: “I am relatively new to the group, having started this March 2024. However, I have been working in the HPC field for about 10 years now, previously with another organization.”

Q. What is your favorite aspect of your job?

WW: “Falling under the broader computing field, HPC is a fast-paced environment where new software, frameworks, and computational concepts emerge almost daily. Working in this ever-evolving field ensures that we are constantly engaged and have the privilege of exploring cutting-edge technologies.”

Q. What is the most interesting project you've worked on here?

WW: “I am relatively new to the group and thus haven’t started on many projects yet. However, I have thought of a few potential projects to work on in the near future.”

Q. What is a skill that’s important to have in your role?

WW: “An important trait for this role is enthusiasm for continuous learning. HPC is a rapidly evolving field that impacts nearly every domain of science, engineering, and medicine. We are frequently introduced to new tools, ideas, and technologies, so being open to ongoing learning is crucial.”

Q. What are your goals for the next few months/years?

WW: “Along with my role as a facilitator, I am eager to explore new technologies for deploying clusters, such as Kubernetes and containers, and to become familiar with OOD or other scientific gateway frameworks. I also hope to collaborate with campus researchers and participate in grant writing and research projects, if possible.”

Q. What do you like to do outside of work?

WW: “In my spare time, I love watching movies with my family, crafting, and sewing. I also enjoy taking a walk or hiking when the weather is appropriate. Gardening is also one of the many things that I want to explore. “
