Read below for more details about our announcements.

Extended Downtimes in July at MARCC

MARCC (Maryland Advanced Research Computing Center) is undergoing mechanical upgrades to add liquid cooling and more power to accommodate new hardware. As a result, there will be an extended downtime from Monday, July 15th at 12:01 AM to Friday, July 19th at 5:00 PM.

During this downtime, MARCC and Rockfish will not be available for use. These changes are necessary to provide the high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) resources needed for computational research. If you have any further questions or concerns, please email help@arch.jhu.edu

Distributed Computing with MATLAB

ARCH has recently installed the MATLAB license of Distributed Computing Engine to enable parallel computing across the cluster nodes. Previously running MATLAB in parallel was limited to the multicore processors of the local machine utilizing only Parallel Computing Toolbox (PCT). Together, PCT and the Distributed Computing Engine allow us to solve big, complicated problems that were either taking too long or impossible due to memory limitations.

To utilize a pool of multi-node workers for your simulation, a cluster profile needs to be created first. The commands and steps are documented in the MATLAB modulefile. One can simply type “module show matlab” and follow the instructions. For any additional questions, please email help@rockfish.jhu.edu

Research Spotlight: Albert Lau

Dr. Albert Lau is an Associate Professor of biophysics and biophysical chemistry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His research combines computational and experimental approaches to study the atomic and molecular details of protein complexes crucial for intercellular communication, with a focus on ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs).
